In the years before his own blistering landscapes, penetrating portraits and intense interiors, he examined the hard lives of the poor, notably through the engravings of Gustav Doré, a series of whose London prints he bought. This second, with its anti-slavery theme, reflected Van Gogh’s interest in social reform similarly shown by the taste in art he developed in London and interest in working men and women. On the table in front of her are copies of two favourite titles: Dickens’s Christmas Books and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
